Types of Aeration

Along with water, oxygen is the basis for life. This applies to all living things, so it is also crucial for biological wastewater treatment processes.

Aeration (ventilation) of biological pools also represents one of the main expenses in operating a wastewater treatment plant. Therefore, it is very important that the planning (selection of aeration type) is optimal and later implementation (installation) is of high quality, as every mistake is quickly noticeable, and costs multiply over the years.

We offer you a comprehensive service when it comes to aeration: from the initial analysis of needs and selection of the optimal type of aeration, through the planning of the layout, to the supply, installation, and commissioning of the system.

Types of Aeration

Membrane aeration systems

composed of a distribution piping network and membrane elements (diffusers), are the most widespread type of aeration, as they are used in over 90% of cases. They are characterized by high efficiency and therefore low energy consumption for the aeration process. A drawback is the relatively short lifespan of the diffusers, requiring replacement every 5-10 years (depending on the type of diffuser). When replacing them, it is necessary to completely drain the pool, which involves additional efforts. To avoid this, it is possible to implement retractable aeration arms, but this also entails additional costs.

Mixing and aeration systems

enable simultaneous aeration and mixing of pool contents (some also perform only mixing). Similar to membrane aeration systems, they receive air through a blower, but they also have an additional drive that breaks the air into small bubbles, ensuring good oxygen transfer. Their advantage lies in easy maintenance (they can be easily extracted from a full pool) and their long lifespan (20+ years), while their disadvantage is lower energy efficiency, which increases with the depth of aeration. They are more suitable for niche applications but can be unbeatable in some cases.

Submersible air ejectors

are based on the combination of a submersible pump with one or more ejectors. The liquid drawn in by the pump is transferred through the ejector, causing a pressure drop due to the Venturi effect, which allows air to be sucked through a tube that is discharged into the atmosphere. The advantage is therefore the easy use without external air supply (blowers). Due to its configuration, it is particularly suitable for use in long rectangular tanks and round or ring-shaped pools. The downside is that it can deliver a limited amount of air, and its efficiency is relatively low. They are mainly used in cases where we want to prevent the occurrence of anaerobic conditions (decay) in pools.

Surface aerators

where the pumping of liquid causes the transfer of oxygen as an aerosol, formed by the "shredding" of water when it comes into contact with air, are considered somewhat outdated technology. However, they still find many applications, especially in older types of wastewater treatment plants where the pools are relatively shallow. Their advantage lies in easy installation and use, but their disadvantage is their relatively low efficiency and the spraying of aerosols around. Nevertheless, they should not be dismissed, especially if they are only needed for a specific period and it might be preferable to rent them rather than purchase them.

Which type of aeration would be suitable for you?

Solutions on demand

From selection through commissioning to final maintenance

Selection of aeration type and preliminary layout

When you present us with your challenge, we'll carefully examine it, learn about your needs and expectations, and then suggest which type of aeration would be most suitable for you.

Selection of aeration supplier and specific layout

Once you're satisfied with the proposal, we'll present various suppliers, along with their advantages and disadvantages, and prepare at least one financial offer for the supply and installation.

Implementation project, ordering, delivery, installation

Upon confirmation of the offer from your side, we prepare detailed layout planning including CAD 2D and 3D drawings. We ensure the delivery of all necessary materials to the site and carry out the installation in the pools, including connection to the air supply.

Testing, performance optimization, and maintenance

After installation, we conduct leak testing as well as optimization of aeration performance after the initial startup. Later on, we can also provide regular maintenance for the aeration process.

"Our competitive advantage over other providers lies in the fact that we do not represent just one manufacturer, but we collaborate with most globally recognized manufacturers, understanding all their strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, we will be able to choose the optimal type and supplier of aeration for you."

Contractors

  • In tenders, you have certain limitations and requirements, often operational costs are also part of bid evaluation, so you wonder what solution would make you more competitive?
  • Get in touch with us, and let us help you prepare the most competitive solution!
  • "We will assist you in selecting the most suitable aeration method and supplier, perform all necessary calculations, prepare a draft layout for the pools, and provide a quotation for supply and installation."

Maintenance team

  • If you've installed aeration of a certain type and supplier, but are facing efficiency issues and headaches due to rising electricity bills, and the supplier is quoting an exorbitant price for replacing the ventilators because they know they have no competition, it's time to consider alternative solutions.
  • Get in touch with us, so we can assess whether cleaning and regular maintenance can extend the lifespan of your existing system, or if we can find a compatible replacement that will be much more cost-effective than your current supplier!
  • We can perform both the cleaning/maintenance of your existing system and its replacement, including the supply and installation of a new one.
